Our Story

ONOWAY BAPTIST CHURCH is a community of faith rooted in the love of God. We believe worship is not just found in prayer, it’s something expressed in everything we do. Our philosophy is deeply rooted in the Holy Scriptures, life’s only guidebook. Come and join us to experience God’s grace for yourself. There’s a special place for you at our welcoming church.

In August of 1932, German settlers in the Onoway District came together and decided to form a Baptist Church.  During that first year 2 lots where they could construct a building were donated to the congregation on the corner of 48th Ave. and 51st St. in Onoway, which is still our location.  And the first service was held in this building on Sunday, August 27, 1933.  Though many years have now since passed and along with them those founding members, the church continues on represented by some of the children of those families, and many others who have joined us along the way.

Our Mission

Rooted and Established in Love

Onoway Baptist Church is a community of faith that helps people to become rooted and established in love.
We exist to tell others about Jesus, worship Him, and grow to be more like Him.

Our Vision

We want to be a thriving church in Onoway with people coming from the surrounding area to find love, hope and a future in Jesus - it is our dream to be life-giving.

Our DNA

Jesus is our Focus
The Holy Spirit is our Guide
The Bible is our Foundation
Grace is our Practice
Authenticity is our Style (Discipleship)
Our Community is our Calling

Our Beliefs

Onoway Baptist Church is affiliated with the North American Baptist Conference and the Alberta Baptist Association.  We have adopted the Statement of Beliefs of the NAB Conference.

Our Leadership

Please feel free to contact Pastor Brian or one of the leadership team members to arrange a visit and swap stories about life, God, your struggles, or crazy times with your family.

Brian and Celia Siewert

Pastor

“Home” for Brian has always been a little crazy and a lot of fun.
"Crazy" because he grew up on a farm with four brothers (no sisters) and has given up recovering.

"Fun" because he now has one son, three daughters, one daughter-in-law, and one son-in-law, which keep life anything but dull. AND NOW ONE GRANDDAUGHTER!!  He has been married to Celia for 30 years and has loved (almost) every minute of it.

Brian has served as the Ministry Director for Faith at Home Ministries and a speaker for Focus on the Family, FamilyLife, the Willow Creek Association, and BreakForth.

Prior to working with Focus on the Family, Brian served in pastoral ministry in churches in British Columbia and Alberta for 11 years. Brian has also made a living by working as a Drug and Alcohol Youth Intervention worker and radio disc jockey and news anchor. Although Brian grew up on the farm, his brothers would no longer call him a farmer. He does unabashedly love country music though (sorry).

Brian's greatest passion in ministry is to serve the Lord in connection with local churches. He is passionate as well about kids, youth, marriage, and families. His greatest information about family life has come from the Bible and having a mess of kids with his wife.  Two of his children are married, with one of the newlyweds living in St. Albert, the other in Konstanz, Germany.
