Power in the Real World
To understand the upside down backwards view we have of power, one only need spend some time in the world into which Jesus was born. In and of itself Israel would not have been attractive to the Romans in their empire building. It was considered a backwater on the edge of the empire, a place where people passed through on their way somewhere else. Why might God have chosen a place such as this?
In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to register.
