Power and the Poor
Archeologist and historians tell us that about 93% of those living in the Roman Empire were subsistence… they only made enough to give themselves basic shelter and some food. Again, we see God doing something incredibly backwards from our perspective. Among these down and outs, the shepherds were the lowest of the low. In a culture that focused on ritualistic cleanliness, none were lower than those who lived far from the temple where they could go to be cleansed, who lived with animals, and so on.
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid.
